# 1: A Quick Tour of Squeak


In this chapter we will give you a high-level tour of Squeak to help you get comfortable with the environment. There will be plenty of opportunities to try things out, so it would be a good idea if you have a computer handy when you read this chapter.

We will use this icon: $$\bigstar$$ to mark places in the text where you should try something out in Squeak. In particular, you will fire up Squeak, learn about the different ways of interacting with the system, and discover some of the basic tools. You will also learn how to define a new method, create an object and send it messages.
