The IC’s presented in this text are not useful in themselves, but are quite powerful building blocks in implementing larger integrated circuits. This chapter will examine a useful IC, a Central Processing Unit (CPU), where these circuits provide the backbone of how the CPU is implemented. The CPU that is presented can be downloaded from the free text Implementing a One Address CPU in Logisim.
This chapter will not attempt to describe the CPU in detail, nor will it attempt to explain how to implement or use programs on this CPU. These details are covered in the referenced text. This chapter will instead break down the CPU components to highlight how the ICs are used in the CPU, to show how important the ICs covered in this text are.
