You will not choose a discipline this semester — and you shouldn't feel pressure to. But it helps to know what the landscape looks like. This is a preview; Chapter 2 goes deeper into each.
| Discipline | Core Focus | Typical Products/Systems |
|---|---|---|
| Civil | Infrastructure and the built environment | Roads, bridges, buildings, water systems |
| Mechanical | Motion, force, energy, heat | Engines, HVAC, robots, vehicles |
| Electrical | Electricity, electronics, power systems | Power grids, circuits, motors |
| Computer | Hardware-software integration, computing systems | Processors, embedded systems, architecture |
| Software | Design of software systems | Applications, operating systems, web platforms |
| Chemical | Materials transformation, processes | Pharmaceuticals, plastics, fuels, food |
| Aerospace | Flight and space systems | Aircraft, spacecraft, propulsion |
| Biomedical | Engineering applied to biology and medicine | Prosthetics, medical devices, imaging |
| Industrial | Systems, processes, optimization | Manufacturing lines, logistics, human factors |
| Environmental | Engineering applied to natural systems | Pollution control, sustainability, remediation |
Every one of these disciplines shares the same core mindset you are learning in this course. The specialization comes later; the habits of thought come first.
The Discipline Research homework assignment asks you to pick one discipline from this table and investigate it in depth — what courses you'd take, what the job market looks like, what specific problems engineers in that field work on. You do not need to commit to that discipline. You just need to explore one seriously.
