Engineering communication has two properties that distinguish it from simply writing down a number:
It is complete. A complete engineering answer includes the numerical result, its unit, the key assumptions, and a statement of what the result means physically or from a design standpoint.
It is auditable. A professional engineering document must be checkable by someone who was not in the room. This means your Define step shows all variables, your Model shows the governing equation symbolically before substitution, your Analyze shows every intermediate calculation, and your Communicate explains the meaning.
| Unstructured | Structured |
|---|---|
| "9810" | "Tension in each cable is 9810 N (9.81 kN), assuming static equilibrium and symmetric loading at θ = 30°. The result would increase significantly at shallower angles — cables should be specified with a safety factor of at least 3× this value." |
Only the structured version is defensible. Only the structured version can be checked by another engineer, used to specify the correct cable, or cited as the basis for a design decision. Chapter 13 (Engineering Communication) develops this further. For now, the standard to aim for: could another engineer reproduce your conclusion from your written work alone?
