Just like you, engineers make economic decisions. Engineering economic decisions are typically guided based on many factors including technical, regulatory, and fiscal considerations, along with environmental, social, and safety impacts.
However, while personal decisions affect an individual’s budget, engineering decisions often involve millions of dollars, public resources, and long-term societal impacts.
At its core, engineering is not simply about designing a functional system, it is about designing the most effective solution within real-world constraints. A bridge or software platform can be technically brilliant, but if the development cost exceeds the available budget or fails to generate value, it will never see the light of day. Conversely, cutting costs recklessly can compromise safety, reliability, and ethics.
This is where engineering economics becomes vital. It provides the quantitative tools and financial frameworks required to compare competing technical alternatives, evaluate life-cycle costs, and manage risk.
