Characterization of ultrashort laser pulses with pulse widths greater than 20 ps can be directly performed electronically using high speed photo detec- tors and sampling scopes. Photo detectors with bandwidth of 100 GHz are available. For shorter pulses usually some type of autocorrelation or cross-correlation in the optical domain using nonlinear optical effects has to be performed, i.e. the pulse itself has to be used to measure its width, because there are no other controllable events available on such short time scales.
