# 8.3: Flat Impulse

The *flat impulse*, Figure \(\PageIndex{1}\), is defined almost identically with the flat

**pulse**, the only difference being that we

**specify**the magnitude of the generalized impulse, \(I_{U}\), which is the area under the time history of the flat pulse, then we

**define**the magnitude of the input function in terms of the impulse and duration, \(U=I_{U} / t_{d}\). Thus, for the flat impulse, from Equation 8.1.1,
