Learning Objectives

On completion of this TLP you should:

  • understand the phenomenon of birefringence
  • know how materials scientists use photoelasticity
  • be able to distinguish between isochromatic and isoclinic fringes
  • be able to relate stress patterns in polycarbonate rods to the bending rig used and the deformation in the rod
  • know and be able to use the Stress-Optic Law
