Topic 18 covers: 1) Explaining the concept of a centroid; 2) Determining the centroid of an area for a body or composite bodies.

Understanding centroids is essential in Statics, as the centroid represents the center of area, mass, or volume for a shape or structure, where its properties are evenly distributed. Calculating the centroid allows engineers to predict how a structure will behave under various loading conditions and is fundamental for further analysis in stability, support, and design. Mastering these concepts enables accurate determination of the center point for simple and composite bodies, which is critical for ensuring balanced and stable structures.

At the end of this chapter, extra sheets are provided to review centroid calculations for simpler geometries and integrals, assisting in determining areas for bodies with irregular geometries.
