Introduction to the Textbook

The traditional textbook publishing model no longer serves the best interests of students, educators, and authors. Textbooks are too expensive for students and too inflexible for instructors. With traditional textbooks routinely costing $150 or more, this book was developed under the Open Educational Resources (OER) model as an alternative free, digital textbook for the course Emotional Intelligence for Effective Project Management.

Target Users

The book is targeted at everyone involved in contributing to or managing projects and programs - individual contributors, project, and program managers. The book is designed to bring out the importance of emotional intelligence in projects and project management at a practical level, using real-life case studies from project and program management. The case studies highlight the "why" and "how" of emotional intelligence in the workplace and demonstrate its lifelong value beyond one's career.

AI Use Statement

AI Use in Course Development – Transparency & Standards

During early idea generation and drafting of course pages, we used ChatGPT as a supportive tool, not as a substitute for human expertise. Specifically:

We deployed a custom, equity-aware Chatbot (prompt-engineered and trained on OER-curated readings and open resources).
The AI’s role was strictly ideation and initial drafting, not final content production.
Every output was then thoroughly reviewed, edited, and revised by the course authors to ensure pedagogical quality, accuracy, and alignment with learning goals.

Copyright & Fair Use Considerations

We aligned with evolving IP policy frameworks, especially insights from the U.S. Copyright Office:

The Office’s Part 3 report on AI model Links to an external site. Training highlights the importance of fair use analysis and restricts reliance on generative AI when it could replicate copyrighted works—our use was limited to non-protected, openly licensed materials.
