Even the emotional intelligence experts trip before learning something new with an emotional situation. Here are some common sense nuggets to bear in mind. Although most of these are already woven into the emotional intelligence framework, it is important to review these individually.
- We can play catch only with those who want to play catch with us. Even emotionally intelligent people run into people who are difficult to work with. We are not born with biases and prejudices, but we acquire them through life experiences and they come in the way. In such situations, it is prudent to continue to work with them to achieve the best outcome. This leads to the next nugget.
- What's in it for them? When people see a potential benefit for themselves from the work they are expected to do, they will do it more willingly. Understanding this need and making it possible for them to achieve makes it easy to get work done by others for a project. This even works with people who are difficult to work with.
- Give credit where credit is due. One cannot make the mistake of taking away credit. It is important to give credit to person who deserves it, whether or not they are easy or difficult to work with. A PM who gives credit where credit is due, earns the trust and credibility from them. For a project manager (PM), this is a critical success factor.
- Always think Win-Win.
