Professional engineering societies exist to advance and advocate for a particular field of engineering. For example, Civil Engineers often join the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) while Electrical Engineers join the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

    Purposes of Engineering Societies

    • Establishing Technical and Ethics Standards: They develop technical specifications, universal safety codes, and ethical guidelines that govern engineering practice.
    • Advocacy and Public Policy: They represent the collective voice of the profession to government bodies, advising lawmakers on technological policy, public infrastructure funding, and licensing regulations.
    • Professional Development and Continuing Education: They provide access to peer-reviewed technical journals, specialized certifications, workshops, and training necessary to satisfy state licensing continuing education requirements.
    • Networking and Community: Through their local chapters, specialized divisions, and national conferences, societies connect students, researchers, and working professionals to foster mentorship, collaboration, and career opportunities.
    • Public Outreach and STEM Promotion: Societies promote public understanding of engineering's impact on society and support engineering students through scholarships, student competitions, and STEM initiatives such as National Engineers Week.

    Think Ahead

Many professional societies have organized student chapters at 4-yr engineering universities. The dues are generally modest and it is a great way to network in your discipline.
