    Learning Objectives
    • Explain why ordinary numeric arrays are sometimes not flexible enough for real-world data.
    • Describe the difference between homogeneous and heterogeneous arrays.
    • Create one-dimensional and two-dimensional cell arrays using curly braces.
    • Correctly use curly braces {} and parentheses () when working with cell arrays.
    • Store, retrieve, modify, and delete information in cell arrays.
    • Use common MATLAB functions for working with cell arrays.
    • Create structures using dot notation and the struct function.
    • Access and modify fields of a structure.
    • Create and use arrays of structures for database-style information.
    • Choose between a cell array, a structure, and a table for a given programming problem.
    • Create tables from vectors and arrays using the table function.
    • Access table variables using dot notation, parentheses, and curly braces.
    • Use tables for column-oriented data that includes labels, variables, and mixed data types.
    Note

    This chapter assumes that you already know how to create basic MATLAB variables, work with numeric arrays, use indexing, and write simple scripts. If you are comfortable with vectors, matrices, strings, and basic indexing, you are ready for this chapter.
