    Learning Objectives
    1. Describe the mechatronic system software and hardware architecture along with the concept of open- and closed-loop control systems. Show that a mechatronic system may contain multiple open- and closed-loop systems.
    2. Explain the difference between microprocessors and microcontrollers. Introduce the general architecture (structure) of a mechatronic microcontroller. Be able to select a proper microcontroller for the mechatronic system application.
    3. Discuss the Arduino family of microcontrollers, especially Arduino MKR 1000 Wi-Fi microcontrollers. Review MATLAB and Simulink software used to program the microcontroller in addition to IDE (integrated development environment) software.
    4. Describe the control system hardware and software architectures from an application example of DC-motor speed control utilizing an Arduino MKR 1000 Wi-Fi microcontroller board, H-bridge pulse-width modulation motor control hardware, and hall-effect speed sensor input.
    5. Provide the concept of the iterative development process, called V-design, used for developing a mechatronic system through both model-based simulation and prototyping validation.

    This chapter provides an introduction to the mechatronic system architecture. It also reviews the associated system hardware, including sensors, actuators, and both open- and closed-loop controls. The chapter describes the mechatronic system in a control system setup, the associated control and communication software used in a mechatronic system, and a design process for mechatronic systems.
